At one point of time, the Chevrolet Tavera was a good selling MUV in the market, being preferred by both private owners as well as tour operators. However, after the BS-4 emission norms came into play in the major metro cities, the Tavera could no more be sold in these markets - this dented its overall sales. For example, in August and September 2011, Chevrolet sold only 1912 and 1785 units respectively. This in contrast to 6554 and 9764 for the Bolero and 1588 and 2061 for the Sumo respectively.
Things are however about to change in December for Chevrolet's MUV. The company is currently testing a sligthly refreshed version of the Tavera with an all-new 100Bhp CRDi diesel motor that will be sourced from ICML, the same company that also manufactures the Rhino MUV. This might be a smaller engine as compared to the current Tavera, but it produces much more power and torque and should be better on fuel economy as well.
Motorbeam recently caught the new Tavera undergoing high altitude testing in Manali as well as Rohtang Pass. As visible from the pictures, the changes in the Tavera are
1. New front and rear bumpers
2. New headlamps - design change and are of the crystal clear variety
3. New bonnet - possible air scoops as well
4. Bigger Grille
The interiors of the Tavera have always been good - providing car like comfort. The new version is expected to have the same cabin though with possible minor changes. The Tavera will be sold in both 7 and 8 seater configuration with both a bench type 3rd row and side facing seats too. Expect lot of different versions with varied list of features with the top end having ABS and air-bags.
The new Tavera will be launched in December with a slight hike in prices.
