Upcoming Cars

Diesel Hyundai i10
facelifted-chevrolet-beat-photo5
Among hatchbacks, most of the cars expected in 2013 are mainly refreshes and facelifts of existing variants, with no all-new car making it to the market other than the Mahindra E2O (formerly called the Mahindra Reva NXR). However, among the refreshes that will come into the market, one can look forward to the Maruti Alto K10 refresh in April 2013. This is the Maruti Alto K10 with the new Maruti Alto 800’s updated body shell. The car will come with the same 1-litre K-Series engine that powers the current K10.
Other interesting hatchbacks to watch out for in 2013 are the updated Chevrolet Beat, expected in summer, that comes with minor styling changes to the front grille and bumper. And then there’s the refreshed Hyundai i10 that has been spotted testing and which is likely to come with a 1.1 litre diesel engine as well.

Premium hatchbacks

Fiat Punto Evo
Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI
Volkswagen Cross Polo

One of the most interesting premium hatchbacks to look out for is the Fiat Punto Evo that should see a launch by the end of 2013. This car comes with revised styling – a sporty front and completely redone interiors. Then there’s the Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI that is scheduled for a mid-year launch with a 105 bhp petrol engine and 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It will be a niche car and will reopen the hot-hatch segment of the market. Volkswagen will also introduce the Cross Polo later in the year, which will come with the 1.2 TSI engine and possibly a new 1.5 litre diesel engine. It will bridge the gap between hatchbacks and compact SUVs – with higher ground clearance, cladding and larger wheels.

Compact sedans

Honda Amaze
Sub-4 meter Mahindra Verito
Compact Tata Manza

The entry-level sedan segment is set to get increasingly competitive in 2013. One of the most anticipated launches is that of the Honda Amaze compact sedan that is based on the Honda Brio. This car will come with a 1.5 litre diesel engine, Honda’s first diesel in India, in addition to the 1.2 litre petrol, and will see an April 2013 launch. Maruti is working on a refresh for the Dzire that will make it more competitive against the Amaze and will come around the festive season next year. Mahindra is planning to launch a sub-4 metre Mahindra Verito which will appear in the first quarter of the year – and should be a lot cheaper than the existing Verito. Tata too is planning a compact-sedan based on the Tata Manza which may be launched by the end of the year.

Mid-size sedans

Chevrolet Sail sedan
New Fiat Linea

Among mid-size sedans one of the cars that will launch fairly early in the year is the Chevrolet Sail sedan. This car will likely have the same diesel engine choice as the Sail U-Va, the 1.3 litre multijet diesel putting out 77 bhp of power and a 1.4 litre petrol engine putting out about 94 bhp of power. Towards the end of the year there are a couple of refreshes expected. One of them is the current Ford Fiesta, which will get a minor makeover with a new grille and front bumper. The other is the Fiat Linea that will get a refreshed front, new tail-lamps and a completely new interior package. The Nissan Sunny and Renault Scala will also introduce one new variant each, which is a CVT automatic transmission variant of the car on the 1.5 litre petrol engine models only.

Compact SUVs

Ford EcoSport
Nissan’s badge-engineered Renault Duster
Maruti XA-Alpha-based mini-SUV

Compact SUVs are here to stay and the segment is a one of the fastest growing in the Indian market. One of the most-anticipated compact SUV launches is that of the Ford EcoSport in February 2013. This sub-4-metre compact SUV will challenge the Renault Duster which has been chalking up healthy sales figures. The EcoSport will come in petrol and diesel, and an automatic transmission option as well. Nissan will also be building its version of the Renault Duster towards the end of the year and there is Maruti’s XA Alpha to look forward to. The XA Alpha will be based on the Swift platform and will come in diesel and petrol with a 4×4 option too.

SUVs

New Honda CR-V petrol
Refreshed Landrover Freelander
Fluidic  Hyundai Santa Fe

Among SUVs there aren’t any new ones toward the budget end of the market, but in the premium category there is plenty to expect. One of the first few launches in 2013 would be the new Honda CR-V with completely refreshed styling. This SUV will come only in petrol (no diesel engine for India as it would be too expensive) and is expected to be priced about Rs. 25 lakh, being an import.  The new LandRover Freelander 2 will come in with a styling refresh. And then there’s the new Hyundai Santa Fe with fluidic styling that is expected in the summer of 2013.

Premium sedans

New Skoda Octavia
New Honda Accord
Mercedes A-Class sedan

The premium sedan segment will see a few launches, but none that are likely to be stunners other than perhaps the Skoda Octavia 2013. This car will bring back the Octavia brand name to India, likely replacing the Skoda Laura (which is the Octavia II in Europe). The other car to look forward to is the new Honda Accord with revised styling, but again no diesel engine. And then there’s the Mercedes A-Class sedan that will be the company’s most inexpensive sedan in its line-up, slotting in below the C-Class.
